Still warm

We saw the otter again, that day
its nose thrilling through the surface
disturbing the separation of air and water
with its gentle arrow of ripples

The day wrapped more colors around
its cooling shoulders
and we turned back to put some light
in your cottage windows,
bringing more logs for the fire and
joking about the masculine virtue of
making it burn soon and well

Later, we pushed our cups aside
and moved the cushions - it was
warm, by then, and
touching me, you mentioned
that there were plenty of books to read
but your hand
reminded me somehow of the otter
and the next morning
the bricks around the fireplace
and even the ashes
still felt good and warm.
