The Midwest

Shanghai shipping winks at dawn
A Bombay Ferris wheel fills the night with tinsel colours, spicy wafts
Diamond and ruby trails
Race across the black Bosphorus
London tubes deliver druggy clubbers, adjusting make-up
Morning editions stack up at King's Cross
Rough-shaved Casablancans argue the world in golden mint sweet tea
Perfumed Parisians move to Cuban rhythms way past midnight
A thousand murmurs, laughs and shouts warm the shining streets

Where are we?
In sunny nowhere land
Safe from an entire world of foreigners
Plains unlicked by surging oceans of exotic -
Fat-free, non-smoking, temperate and unembraced
Here, daytime is for work, and at night, we sleep.
