Men and Women

I stood on a volcanic outcrop
the ocean swirled and clutched
through gaps in the sharp rock

a man in the water was saying something
it seemed urgent but I couldn't understand
his words were foreign, or perhaps it was a dream
he was half-smiling

I gestured to draw the attention
of the grouped families on the beach
a few wives saw me and
following the line of my pointing finger
plucked anxiously at their husbands

the men strode down the sand
toward the one whose smile
was clearly, now not natural;
in their different states of masculinity
they pulled him out through the surf.

Below the knee his leg was gone
and blood soaked quickly into the sand
his body looked thin and white
and he was allowed to stop smiling
