A father's day poem

Giapetto

Way over the garden wall
I can see
sat upon Papa’s king shoulders
a pocketful of faraway secrets
hidden in the briar patch

swing my little body round and round
explaining planetary motion and the
value of the vote
facts and duties stacked like blocks
rough energy for ball games, jollity and tumble

But who crawls childishly naïve
when it comes to hugs?
surely your little heart loved
when your legs were still chubby
did you enter the forest and have it gobbled up
by the Wicked Witch, or the Wolf?

Once upon a time, Papa, before I was born
how did you stop being a real boy
and became wooden?
