Arizona

Sand grains, skin so parched
sand grains fall away
like nickels
cheek bone on rock
corpse in truck
and scattered, outcast
from meager cactus shadows
thirteen angled bodies, not cold
not pale as tin
vault of lifeless gold

Yes, that’s Hermano’s gulf blue shirt
There, Tio’s boots
salted by his sweat
a lifetime’s tears too arid, now
to make a living

Let us cut our funeral planet in small pieces
some with frosting, some without
a hot wind rises from the desert
Have Carlos run the lawn sprinkler
and close the garden gate
